The Three Wise Men

The 6th of January is an important date in Spain. The three wise men visit our houses leaving presents for the good children underneath the tree and black coal for the naughty ones.

The Feast of the Epiphany or the Three Kings’ Day is a celebration of the adoration of the baby Jesus by the Three Wise Men. Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar travelled to present baby Jesus with three symbolic gifts, gold, frankincense and myrrh.

The celebrations of the arrival of the wise men to Bethlehem kick off on the 5th of January. Since the 19th century, Spanish towns and cities have been putting on parades to mark the occasion. There might be floats with effigies of each of the Three Wise Men in the parade. These are big, colourful parades that make their way through the main streets of the town, throwing handfuls of sweets out over the crowds.

The day wouldn’t be complete without the traditional Roscón de Reyes, sweet circular bread with sugar and dried fruits on top. There is a little model of a king or queen hidden inside, and whoever finds it gets to be king or queen for the day. There’s also normally a bean in there, and whoever gets that has to either buy the sweet treat the following year or wash the dishes that day.

The arrival of the three wise men officially marks the end of the Chrismas period in Spain.

No puedo estar más en contra de esta afirmación. Es obvio que el medioambiente es un asunto de todas las personas de este planeta. Es nuestro deber cuidarlo. Existen muchos motivos por los que pienso esto.

I cannot disagree more with this statement. It is obvious that the environment is a matter of every person in this planet. It is our duty to look after it. There are many reasons for which I think this.

Para empezar, la contaminación es un problema preocupante que deberíamos intentar evitar. Los índices de contaminación han aumentado mucho en poco tiempo. Con acciones tan básicas como el uso de transportes públicos o reciclar se puede ayudar a reducir la contaminación.

To begin, pollution is a worrying issue that we should try to avoid. The pollution levels have increased a lot in a short time. With basic actions as the use of public transports or recycling we could help dicrease pollution.

Por otro lado, no puedo dejar de mencionar el obvio aumento de la temperatura global. Los expertos prevén que para final de siglo subirá 3 grados más, esto es algo que impactaría gravemente a las generaciones futuras.

On the other hand, I cannot stop mentioning the obvious increase of the global temperature. Experts predict that by the end of the century this one will go up by 3 more degrees, this is something that would make a serious impact on future generations.

En mi opinión, creo que deberíamos responsabilizarnos de este asunto. Todos vivimos en el mismo planeta y lo que hacemos en nuestra vida diaria afecta al medioambiente. Por eso debemos reciclar más, usar más el transporte público o hacer un buen uso del agua.

In my opinion, I think we should take responsibility in this matter. We all live in the same planet and what we do in our daily lives affects the environment. That is why we must recicle more, use more public transport or make a good use of the water.

En conclusión, el medioambiente es nuestra responsabilidad. Es una lástima que haya personas que piensen lo contrario. Si no lo cuidamos nosotros, ¿Quién lo hará?

In conclusion, environment is our responsibility. It is a pity that there are people who think otherwise. If we do not look after it, who will do it?

As you all may know by now in the Spanish Leaving Certificate Examination you will be asked to write an Opinion Piece either agreeing or disagreeing with a title. You will have a choice of 2 titles (since COVID there has been a choice of 3 ).

We will now look at the titles of the 2021 exam paper and I will then write a sample for one of them.

a) El mundo necesita voluntarios.

b) Es importante ayudar a la gente.

c) Ser voluntario es una experiencia fantástica.

Please find bellow a brief sample answer for the title A; `El mundo necesita voluntarios´.

No podría estar más de acuerdo con esta afirmación. Necesitamos ser más solidarios y aportar nuestro granito de arena para hacer un mundo mejor.

I could not agree more with this statement. We need to show more solidarity and play our part to make a better world.

Los voluntarios ayudan a mejorar la vida de otras personas, y el mundo en general necesita ser mejorado. Existen muchas maneras de ser voluntario. Por ejemplo, se puede simplemente echar una mano a tus vecinos.

El Día de Todos los Santos

Why is today a special date?

Although Halloween is becoming more and more popular, today is a more important date in the Spanish calendar.

Every year on November 1st, Spain and other countries around the world celebrate a holiday of remembrance in honor of their deceased relatives and friends. This holiday is known as Día de Todos los Santos (All Saints' Day).

Observed nationwide, many families, gather in the cemeteries bearing bouquets of fresh flowers to visit their departed loved ones and keep their memory alive.

The traditional thing to do on November 1st is to purchase flowers and take them to decorate your loved ones’ graves. You can see one of these traditional scenes in the movie Volver by Pedro Almodóvar. Churches also hold special masses in memory of all the people who have passed away and the cemeteries are filled with color from every type of flower imaginable. In fact, this is the day of the year when the most flowers are sold .

Another activity, especially popular in the north of Spain, is to head out to the streets or the countryside for a traditional castañada , in which friends and family together to eat castañas (chestnuts). The nuts are roasted either traditionally, in small campfire, or in a more modern way, on a portable grill.

TRADITIONAL SWEET TREATS

All Saints’ Day is the best time to eat special treats like bueñuelos de viento (wind fritters) or huesos de santo (saint’s bones).

Buñuelos de viento
These dough fritters are filled with custard, chocolate, cream, or whatever your heart desires. No one knows exactly when this treat was invented, but we know it dates at least back to the 1600s because King Phillip II’s cook made some references to it. Legend has it that when you eat a buñuelo, a soul is released from purgatory. This has made eating buñuelos a popular custom on All Saints’ Day.

Huesos de santo
Saint’s bones are made of marzipan rolled into finger-sized tubes. They don’t really look like bones, so don’t worry about the name. The name comes from the final coloring it acquires after being baked and covered in syrup: a bone-like beige hue. Huesos de santo are also traditionally filled with a sweet egg yolk concoction, but nowadays you can get all different types of filling, from chocolate to coconut shavings to marmalade, banana, etc.).

Algunas recetas para hacer con los niños en Halloween

1. EL FANTASMA CHOCOLATERO

Una receta muy sencilla para la que solamente necesitareis plátanos y trozos de chocolate. Decóralos al gusto.

2. ARAÑAS DELICIOSAS

Ingredientes:

- Oreos para el cuerpo de la araña

- Palitos salados o pretzels alargados como patas para la araña

- Trozos de chocolate blanco para los ojos

No olvides: las arañas tienen ocho patas

3. EL MONSTRUO DE FRANKENSTEIN

Ingredientes:

- Cuatro kiwis

- Palitos salados de aperitivo para la boca y los tornillos

- Pepitas de chocolate para los ojos

PASOS A SEGUIR

Primero, pelamos el kiwi dejando un poco de piel para el pelo de Frankenstein. Con un cuchillo afilado marcamos trazos en la parte delantera del kiwi, que serán el flequillo del monstruo de Frankenstein. Por la parte trasera, damos un corte recto asemejando la parte del cogote del monstruo.

Ya solamente falta ponerle los ojos, con dos pepitas de chocolate y los tornillos del cuello (o de las sienes), que haremos con trocitos de palitos salados de aperitivo. Esos mismos palitos nos valen para hacerle la boca al monstruo. Los niños pueden ayudarnos a decorar los monstruos, siendo una tarea entretenida.

The first question I normally get asked is ´what is the best age to start learning Spanish´- The answer? The sooner the better.

Children , especially in their early years, are like little sponges , constantly absorbing information from their surroundings in a natural way. That's why it is very beneficial for them to start learning another language at a young age. Several studies have demonstrated the positive impact of learning a second language has on the native language. When children learn to speak Spanish, they naturally become better speakers on their own language.

Language classes, in this case Spanish classes, should be taught using fun and interactive methods, particularly when teaching small children. The best way for them to learn is through games and play as they are not even aware they are learning!

I guess the last question is, why Spanish? Spanish is the third most spoken language in the world. It is a practical language and it will definitely open many doors in the future!
